    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COMMUNITY GROUP WORKING TO SAVE THE SUGAR HOUSE PARK FIREWORKS AND RAISE $35,000 BY JUNE 1

SALT LAKE CITY (May 5, 2010) – After more than two decades, the annual Sugar House Park Fireworks no longer has the funding needed to host the show this year. A group headed by Sugar House resident, Scott Workman, is working to raise $75,000 for the Sugar House Park Fireworks, held during the Fourth of July holiday, through the sponsorships of local organizations and residents. So far, $40,000 has been committed and $35,000 is still needed by June 1 to meet the city permit deadline.

This event draws as many as 35,000 people to Sugar House Park, and for many local businesses, is the busiest day of the year. Many are talking about what would happen to the Sugar House economy if it didn’t take place in 2010.

“Our family has watched the show for the last 22 years and it’s a tradition we want to continue for generations to come,” said Workman, the volunteer events coordinator. “The entire Sugar House community and people throughout the area come every year to Sugar House Park to watch one of the largest, free fireworks show in the state. This is a great opportunity for the community to pitch in to help save this local Fourth of July tradition.”

Whole Foods Market and Noodles & Company are supporting this community cause by hosting promotional days. On May 18, Noodles & Company’s eight Salt Lake City-area restaurants, including its Sugar House location, will provide 25 percent of sales to the fireworks. On May 25, Whole Foods Market in Sugar House will provide 5 percent of sales to the fireworks.

“It has been great working with these two national companies who are taking the lead in helping our local event and asking for nothing in return,” said Workman. “I am also pleased with the response of the Sugar House community that has quickly jumped on board to save the fireworks.”

Sponsorship money has been secured with the Salt Lake City Corp. committing $15,000 and Yes! Utah committing $5,000. Many Sugar House residents have also already helped by purchasing small sponsorships for as little as $5.

Beginning May 17, “I helped save the Sugar House Fireworks” buttons will be sold for $1 at Noodles & Company, Whole Foods Market as well as other businesses to help raise funds for the firework show. Individuals who purchase buttons will receive a discount on purchases at participating locations and receive preferred seating at the firework show on Saturday, July 3.
